Team Hope 2013

Club members were involved in the filling of shoeboxes for the Third World, also in the Parish Centre, on 8th November last. Co-ordinator, Marie Gayson, had done a good lot of preliminary work prior to the night. She collected boxes, purchased suitable items and produced a letter for distribution to the businesses of the town for financial contributions. There’s quite a bit of work involved as the shoeboxes have to be covered as well as filled. Then there are a number of age groups and items for boys and girls so that it’s not as simple as having a conveyor belt and filling the box at will as it comes down the line. Marie got help from a number of Lions including President Paul & Peggy Sonny O’Sullivan, Seamus King, Ned O’Toole & Margaret, Patricia Quirke, Richard & Kathleen Long.

The good news is that 121 boxes were filled and substantially at that. As well a substantial amount of money was collected from businesses for the despatch of the boxes, €4 per box, to their destinations. It’s a great project because so little does so much, bringing joy and happiness to kids around the world, whose lives would not be touched otherwise. Anyone who has watched the destruction caused by the typhoon in the Philippines, will have witnessed the flimsiness of the existences of people in many countries and what a box of small items from out material rich society may do for lives that have so little.

Cashel Person of the Year 2013 – Margaret O’Toole

Margaret O’Toole is the very popular Cashel Person of the Year for 2013.  She was presented
with her award at a most enjoyable function in the Council Chamber, Friar  Street on Friday, March 15
by Lions President, Paul Monks.  She is the twenty-seventh recipient  of the award, which is
organised by the Cashel Lions Club.
The event was chaired by Councillor Dan Dillon, who was deputising for  the  Mayor and
Deputy Mayor of Cashel, Cllrs Sean McCarthy and Joe Joe Moloney, both  unavoidably absent
on the occasion. Also present were about sixty guests made up of family and  friends of Margaret,
plus former recipients of the honour and members of the Cashel Lions  Club.
The chairman, who is also a long time member of the Lions, welcomed  everyone to a wonderful
occasion and then handed over to Lion President, Paul.
President of Lions
The President thanked the chairman for his remarks and the Council for the  use of the premises
for this very important function.  He welcomed all the guests, especially the previous year’s winner,
Dr. Neil Gregory.  He mentioned there were five nominations for the  2013 award and the adjudicators,
who were members of the Thurles Lions, gave due consideration to all the  nominations before coming
down in favour of Margaret O’Toole, a very worthy winner.
He congratulated Margaret on her success and presented her with the  perpetual trophy.
He called on the winner to respond and she stated that it was a privilege  to receive the honour and
she expressed her sincere thanks to those who nominated her and the  adjudicators for choosing her.
Praise for Winner
Anne Devitt was one of the people who nominated the winner and she stated  it was a sincere
pleasure to propose Margaret.  She had known here for a long time and  she was ‘a tremendous
person, a fine woman.’ She was always kind and showed great bravery  following the bereavement of her son
when she turned her attention to cancer care.  She continued: ‘In our  community a person like Margaret
needs to be recognised and I have always said that this award by the Lions  is a wonderful way of giving
recognition to such work.’
Dan Dillon, who had seconded Margaret for the award, concurred with Anne’s  remarks and listed the
many activities in which Margaret was involved. As well as cancer care, she  did untold voluntary work
for the community.  She was involved in fund-raising for many worthy  causes. She used her artistic talents
to produce goods that could be sold to raise money. She ran coffee  mornings. She helped out annually
with the Lions Club senior citizens holiday. And, there was much  more.
Dan concluded by saying that he nominated her ‘because we would be missing  out on an ideal candidate
for Person of the Year if we didn’t choose her. She was not a limelight  seeker but always well prepared
in anything she did.  She is a worthy recipient of this award and I  wish her every success in the future.  I
want to thank her for everything she has done for the community.’
Other Speakers
Anne Kennedy, manager of the Cancer Care Support Centre in Clonmel, referred to Margaret as a valued member,
a great fund-raiser, a maker of beautiful jewelery, scarves, cards and  candles.  She also did flower-arranging classes
for the centre.  She was honoured to have met her and she was there to  congratulate her on behalf of the centre.
Monsignor James Ryan described Margaret as doing the Christian thing in the  community. Dean Christy O’Dwyer, P.P.
acknowledged Margaret’s contribution to the parish.  He saluted her  for her work and stated that her work
and effort helped to enrich the community.
A previous winner, Joe Currivan, congratulated Margaret on her award and  told her she thoroughly deserved it.
The final task of the evening was for Lions President Paul to make a  presentation to the previous year’s winner,
Dr. Neil Gregory who, in reply, congratulated Margaret and stated that her  work made the town a better place.

Our Charter Anniversary dinner has often been held late but never taken place early. Normally held the week of February, this year it took place in Baileys Hotel on Tuesday, January 29th. It went off  very well with seventeen lions and their partners in attendance. Of course the  occasion was graced by the presence of District Governor Joe Smith and his wife,  Monica, who enjoyed themselves very well and sent a nice thank you note to  President Paul. President Paul  presented the District Governor with a piece of Rossa  Pottery in honour of his visit.

Senior Citizen’s Party 2013

This is one of the big events of the Lions Club calendar and it took place this year on the  20th January in Halla na Feile, Cashel. This  was a new venture with the event held on a Sunday afternoon.

The Sunday date meant that the tables could only be  set up on Sunday morning because of bingo on Saturday night. This went off very well and was very successful as a fine number of Lions turned out early on  Sunday morning to ensure that everything was ship shape for the afternoon.

There was a good attendance on the day with approximately 145 guests seated for dinner. Roast beef was on the menu and everybody seemed to be happy with that. The band were specially commissioned for the day by Tommy Moloney and the dance-floor was busy with Paddy Downey and his Social Dancing colleagues showing us all how it is done.

Paddy  Downey has to take great credit for the whole operation and getting the plates  heated in the Nagle Centre. The band did a great job even though some yearned for the familiarity  of Just 3. Thanks are also due to  Michael Brosnan who supplied the Guinness free and set up the dispensing  operation as well as providing the half-pint glasses.
